This course revisits core principles and combines these with latest research and evidence based best practice. The course is interactive and delegates will be expected to practice and embed new practices between sessions – thinking differently about formative assessment through acting differently.
Course Overview
Sessions 1-4 will be online (Teams) - times from 4 - 5 pm
Session 5 will be face to face - time from 4 - 5.30 pm, venue: The Priory School Shrewsbury
Each session will provide
- an overview of the topic,
- an opportunity to share and discuss current best practice in school
- a range of recommended resources to support progression within this area
Between each session teachers will be expected to draw on one or more aspects from the session and use this to develop their classroom practice further. The beginning of sessions 2-4 will include time for delegates to share progress from the previous session.
Session 1 – Principles of formative assessment

Session 2 – the Learning dialogue
Date: 3rd March 2022 times 4 - 5 pm
- Effective use of questions
- Revealing misconceptions and prior knowledge
- Modelling
- Socratic dialogue
Session 3 – written and oral feedback
Date: 17th March 2022 times 4 - 5 pm
- Effective oral feedback
- Whole school policies v. subject area practice
- Making it manageable, and meaningful
Session 4 – Developing collaborative independent learner
Date: 31st March 2022 times 4 - 5 pm
- Supporting improved metacognition
- Strategies to support effective group discussions
Session 5 – Reflecting on progress and sharing next steps
Date: 12th May 2022 times 4 - 6 pm
This session will be held face to face at The Priory School, Shrewsbury will not exceed 2 hours and may be shorter depending on the number of delegates
- Each delegate will give a brief presentation on the practice they have developed as a result of the course
- We will attempt to address ay needs identified from session 1 which have not been included within sessions 1-4 in the latter part of this synoptic session.
